With great sadness we learned about the passing of Chick Corea, a pioneer of jazz and a trailblazing keyboardist. We were looking forward to welcoming him and his trio to the Pierre Boulez Saal in March.
Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, on June 12, 1941, Chick Corea moved to New York City in his early 20s but soon abandoned his academic pursuits at Columbia University and Juilliard to make a name for himself performing at some of the city’s most prestigious jazz venues. He joined the Miles Davis Quintet in the late 60s, and in 1971 co-founded Return to Forever, one of the most influential bands in the history of fusion. Over the following five decades, he remained at the forefront of jazz, leading a variety of groups and performing solo. He died in Tampa, Florida, on February 9, 2021.
As a small tribute, here’s a selection of some of his most enduring tracks.
