The Architect of the Pierre Boulez Saal Celebrated His 90th in "His" Hall

The open-minded and adventurous spirit that has made Frank Gehry one of the defining architects of our time can also be felt in every performance that takes place in the concert hall that he designed. The unique space of the Pierre Boulez Saal is intimately connected with the personality of its architect—which makes it the perfect setting for the celebration of Gehry’s 90th birthday on February 28, 2019. Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Michael Barenboim, and a group of other artists who have been closely associated with the hall since its opening almost exactly two years ago gather for a musical tribute to Gehry’s life and work.

Creating the Pierre Boulez Saal

Text by Paul Goldberger, formerly architecture critic for both The New York Times and The New Yorker. He has written numerous books on the subject including Why Architecture Matters and Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry, published in 2019.

When the design was done for this tiny hall, Daniel informed me that they were going to name it the Pierre Boulez Hall, which brought tears to my eyes.

I heard that Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said had a proposal for speaking to each other through music. It was something I totally believed in.
