String Quartet in E minor

Approximate running time: 1h 30m with one intermission

Before the string quartet repertoire takes center stage for an entire week toward the end of the season, the Pierre Boulez Saal welcomes one of the world’s most acclaimed quartet ensembles. Founded more than 40 years ago at New York’s Juilliard School, the Emerson String Quartet again and again has set standards with its interpretations. As the “father” of the quartet genre, Haydn opens the group’s program. Also heard are a new work by American composer Richard Wernick, with whom the Emerson String Quartet has collaborated in the past, and a true rarity: Giuseppe Verdi’s only chamber music work, composed in 1873, two years after the premiere of his opera Aida.
