Johann Sebastian Bach
Chaconne (Partita No. 2 in D Minor BWV 1004) (arranged for Piano by Ferruccio Busoni)
Tre Sonetti di Petrarca S 158
Grandes Etudes de Paganini S 141
Heard as a duet partner earlier in the year, Giuseppe Guarrera also makes his solo recital debut this season. The Sicilian-born pianist performs works from three centuries that not only have a connection to his home country but also trace fascinating historical relationships. Scarlatti and Berio form the cornerstones. In his arrangement of Bach’s chaconne for solo violin, Busoni brings a Baroque masterpiece into the late 19th century, while Liszt’s highly virtuosic compositions take both the violin works of Paganini and the poetry of Petrarch as their inspiration.
