The Hagen Quartett returns to the Pierre Boulez Saal to perform Mozart’s last two string quartets during this year's Quartet Week. The composer, heavily in debt, was forced to sell them “for a trivial sum” in 1790 to make ends meet. These two works are complemented by the D-minor Quartet K. 421. Written in 1785, when public enthusiasm for the string quartet was at its height in Vienna, the piece is part of the set Mozart dedicated to his “dear friend Haydn,” creating a masterful musical monument to the “father” of the quartet genre.
