In his Pierre Boulez Saal debut, Igor Levit explores the concept of musical variation in its diverse manifestations. The program includes Baroque passacaglias by Johann Caspar Kerll and Georg Muffat as well as Busoni’s monumental Fantasia contrappuntistica, a free continuation of Bach’s unfinished Art of the Fugue. The second volume of Frederic Rzewski’s episodic cycle Dreams, which was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s film of the same name and premiered by Levit in 2015, serves as a contemporary counterpoint.
