For most cellists, a performance of Bach’s six solo suites in one night should mark a highlight of any concert season. Jean-Guihen Queyras goes one step further: he commissioned five contemporary composers to write short solo pieces that (together with three miniatures by György Kurtág) are performed as “echoes” between the Bach suites, introducing, connecting, and reflecting on them. The result is a concert experience that offers unexpected perspectives on well-known masterworks.
