Études d'exécution transcendante S 139

Approximate running time: 2h 15m with one intermission

Robert Schumann once described Liszt’s Études d’exécution transcendante as “Etudes to be performed by, at most, ten or twelve players in the world”—and the same could be said of Debussy’s piano etudes. Both cycles seem to reach beyond the limits of what is technically possible for the performer as well as the instrument, while at the same time transforming the genre itself from a mere finger exercise into a virtuoso masterpiece. Kirill Gerstein performs both works for his Pierre Boulez Saal debut.
