On the final day of the Quartet Week, the Pierre Boulez Saal and the Barenboim-Said Akademie invite audiences to take a look behind the scenes—and to join the Kronos Quartet for a look ahead to the future of the string quartet. In anticipation of its 50th anniversary in 2023, the ensemble launched “Fifty for the Future,” an initiative started in 2015 to commission 50 new works from contemporary composers. The goal: to create a diverse and many-voiced catalogue of compositions for string quartet aimed not least at introducing the younger generation of artists to the music of our time. For an entire day, a selection of these pieces will be heard in the Pierre Boulez Saal and various rooms throughout the Akademie—while audiences are invited to explore the building.
