“There is a great man living in this country—a composer,” Arnold Schoenberg wrote toward the end of his life in his American exile: “His name is Ives.” Renaud Capuçon and Kit Armstrong perform Schoenberg’s late Phantasy for Violin and Piano, written in 1949, alongside Charles Ives’s Second Violin Sonata, a vivid musical portrait of the composer’s home country that brims with allusions and quotes from popular and traditional American music. Two of Beethoven’s sonatas bookend the program.
