The Quartet Series
What began as a form of non-professional domestic music-making in earlier centuries has become a laboratory for innovative ideas: in the string quartet genre, composers from the First Viennese School to the present day have been exploring and expanding the boundaries of form, sound, and expression time and again. Over the course of the 2021–22 season, a varied selection of quartet repertoire will be heard in the elliptical space of the Pierre Boulez Saal, which is ideally suited to the blending of tradition and innovation, and, with its intimate atmosphere, brings listeners closer to the music than most other venues.
In the second concert of its chronological presentation of Shostakovich’s complete string quartets, the Hagen Quartet performs three works written in the uncertain times around the death of Stalin. As part of its season-spanning Schoenberg cycle, the Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet takes on the composer’s genre-expanding Second Quartet together with soprano Mojca Erdmann. The Michelangelo String Quartet performs music by Bartók, Schubert, and Nikolai Tcherepnin, while the Heath Quartet presents the European premiere of the Second String Quartet by British composer and oboist Helen Grime alongside works by Haydn and Beethoven.
