Widmann Three Shadow Dances for Solo Clarinet
Jörg Widmann
Musical Performance Solo / Contemporary Music 0Like few other instruments, the clarinet allows sounds to arise out of nothing and fade into nothing. The “shadowland” in between is explored by composer and clarinetist Jörg Widmann in his 2013 Drei Schattentänze (“Three Shadow Dances”) for solo clarinet—and, as the composer explains, this led him to discover entirely new aspects of his instrument. Each of the three dances illuminates a different facet: “Echo-Tanz” plays with contrasts in dynamics and sonic color as well as numerous microtonal nuances and sound clusters, while “(Under) Water Dance” imagines a clarinet sound beyond the water’s surface. In the final “Danse africaine” with its amplified key noises, the clarinet becomes a percussion instrument. After his only other work for solo clarinet, the early Fantasie written in 1993, Jörg Widmann opens up entire new worlds of technical and sonic possibilities for the instrument in his Drei Schattentänze.
