The Historic Ramallah Concert
Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra
Musical Performance Ensemble & Orchestra 1The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra’s concert in Ramallah in 2005 was a historic event: for the first time, the orchestra, which consists of young musicians from Israel, Palestine, and other parts of the Middle East and North Africa, performed in one of the members’ home countries, led by its founder Daniel Barenboim. The program included Mozart’s Sinfonia concertante, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, and Nimrod from Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The concert marked the highlight in what was then the ensemble’s six-year history. Today, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is a regular guest at leading venues and festivals around the world. Since the Ramallah concert, the musicians have also appeared in Rabat, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. The goal remains to perform in other countries of the Middle East.
