Mozart Clarinet Quintet
Jörg Widmann & Berlin Staatskapelle String Quartet
Musical Performance Quintet & Chamber Ensemble 0In 1778, Mozart paid a visit to Mannheim—then home to one of Europe’s best orchestras—and was introduced to a new instrument he instantly fell in love with: “Ah, if only we too had clarinetti!” he wrote excitedly in a letter to his father Leopold. “You would not believe the wonderful effect a symphony has with flutes, oboes, and clarinets!” In Vienna, he later met Anton Stadler, a celebrated clarinet virtuoso in the court orchestra. Fascinated by his playing, Mozart wrote almost all of his clarinet works for Stadler, including the A-major Quintet K. 581. Stadler had even constructed a new variant of the instrument, extending its lower register by several notes. Mozart’s Quintet and his Clarinet Concerto were originally intended for the so-called basset clarinet. Modern performances usually use a conventional instrument.
