24 Preludes and Fugues Op. 87
Johann Sebastian Bach has been considered “the beginning and end of all music,” and in one way or another, his works have had an influence on almost every composer who came after him—including Dmitri Shostakovich, who paid homage to the great Baroque master with his Preludes and Fugues Op. 87. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Bach’s death, Shostakovich took inspiration from the Well-tempered Clavier and wrote 24 pairs of works in all major and minor keys. Alexander Melnikov takes on the unique challenge of performing the entire cycle in one evening.
