Variations and Fugue in B major on a Theme by George Frideric Handel Op. 24
Schumann’s Faschingsschwank aus Wien—the title roughly translates as “Carnival Jest from Vienna”—resembles a musical masquerade. “From every side, fireworks of wit and mischief shoot into the air,” as Schumann’s contemporary and fellow composer Carl Koßmaly described it. For her Pierre Boulez Saal debut, postponed several times due to the pandemic, Alexandra Dovgan combines this humor-filled work with Brahms’s late Intermezzi Op. 117, described by the composer as the “lullabies of my sorrows.” The young Russian pianist, born in 2007, opens her program with Schubert’s famous A-major Sonata.
