Johannes Brahms
Sonata for Viola (Clarinet) and Piano in E-flat major Op. 120/2

The dark, warm sound of the viola has inspired composers from different eras to write works particularly rich in emotion and expression—including Britten’s variations on a song by English Renaissance master John Dowland, Salvatore Sciarrino’s Ai limiti della notte, which was written over the course of a single night, and Shostakovich’s highly personal Viola Sonata, his final work. Antoine Tamestit and Cédric Tiberghien close their program with two pieces by Brahms.

Approximate running time: 1h 30m without intermission
