Pierre Boulez began writing his only string quartet, Livre pour Quatuor, in 1948 and characteristically returned to it in later years to reconsider the score. The Arditti Quartet, which premiered the exceedingly difficult complete Livre in 1985, now performs the world premiere of the editorial reconstruction of the fourth movement by Jean-Louis Leleu and Philippe Manoury, Boulez's younger colleague at IRCAM.
