With Le Marteau sans maître, 30-year-old Pierre Boulez achieved his decisive breakthrough as a composer in 1955. Among his best-known works to this day, the piece is based on surrealist poems by René Char. François-Xavier Roth, Donatienne Michel-Dansac, and the Boulez Ensemble return to this extraordinary score, which they first performed together at the Pierre Boulez Saal in March 2017, this time presenting it in a lecture concert format: an introduction with musical examples (in English) will be followed by a full performance.
