For the opening of the 2020–21 season, Daniel Barenboim and the Boulez Ensemble are joined by soprano Sarah Aristidou in a performance of Jörg Widmann’s Labyrinth IV. In this re-interpretation of the Minotaur myth, the composer sets texts by Euripides, Brentano, Heine, and Nietzsche. Widmann also performs the clarinet part in works by Mozart and Alban Berg. The program opens with Schubert’s Quartettsatz.
The concert is dedicated to the memory of the late British arts manager Sir Peter Jonas who passed away on April 22, 2020, at the age of 73. He had been closely associated with the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WZB) and the Pierre Boulez Saal for many years. In June 2019, he and Daniel Barenboim curated the program celebrating the WZB’s 50th anniversary at the Pierre Boulez Saal, which included the acclaimed world premiere of Labyrinth IV.
