Since it was first launched in 2001, the Campus Project initiated by Beethovenfest Bonn and Deutsche Welle has provided a space for international encounters, for exchange, and for sharing music. This year’s edition, originally scheduled to feature participants from Germany and émigré musicians from Belarus, responds to current political developments by also including performers from Ukraine, in a program centered around Beethoven’s Third Symphony with its heroic, revolutionary attitude. Its four movements, heard in adaptations for different chamber ensembles, are interspersed with songs of resistance, hope, and new beginnings, performed by singers from the three countries involved, as well as film sequences captured in some of the displaced people’s new homes by Belarusian conductor andfestival director Vitali Alekseenok. A new work by Belarusian composer Olga Podgayskaya completes the program.
