For almost 20 years, the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra has been known in the wold of music as a global ambassador of cultural understanding. Beyond the spirit of the music, the young artists from Israel, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Iran, and other countries of the Middle East share an open mind for the experiences and perspectives of their fellow musicians and a willingness for conversation and dialogue. As in previous years, one of the highlghts of the annual summer tour will be the performance at the Waldbühne in Berlin. Its unique atmosphere and special audience make this venue a particularly good match for the orchestra's spirit and musical exuberance. In an all-Russian program, Martha Argerich, named an honorary member of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in 2015, will once again confirm her status as one of today's most esteemed artists performing Shostakovich's First Piano Concerto. With its founder Daniel Barenboim on the podium, the orchestra also offers Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony, one of the most beloved works of Russian Romanticism.
