Hiérophanie for Soprano and Ensemble

Founded by Pierre Boulez in 1976, the French Ensemble intercontemporain is among the world’s leading groups for contemporary music. The group now returns to the Pierre Boulez Saal, led by its music director Matthias Pintscher, with a program of new and brand new music: the 1970–71 Hiérophanie, an enigmatic piece of instrumental theater by Claude Vivier that moves between ritual and improvisation, seeks the sacred in the profane and the transcendent in the ordinary. It is paired with the world premiere of Contre-espace by the young French composer Sasha J. Blondeau and the German premiere of Shadow of the Future, Magnus Lindberg’s new work for ensemble inspired by the poetry of Edith Södergran.

Approximate running time: 1h 30m with one intermission
