Clarinet Quintet in B-flat major Op. 34

The literary oeuvre of James Joyce—and his monumental novel Ulysses in particular—inspired Hungarian composer Peter Eötvös in the creation of two closely connected works. Joyce for clarinet and string quartet had its world premiere a few months ago in Madrid performed by Jörg Widmann and the Cuarteto Quiroga. At the Pierre Boulez Saal, Widmann now presents the companion piece for solo clarinet. In addition to excerpts from Joyce’s works, read by the Welsh actor Paul Rhys, the program also includes Carl Maria von Weber’s famous Clarinet Quintet.
