“It has always fascinated me hearing from people the many different images and messages that any one piece of music can conjure up in their imaginations,” says John Surman. The British saxophonist, who celebrates his 80th birthday this August, ends his international touring career with his first ever appearance at the Pierre Boulez Saal (and the following concert in Hamburg). For this special occasion, he brings his most recent project Words Unspoken to Berlin. Its title alludes to the instant musical understanding found by the members of his quartet. The evening’s second set will feature a world premiere work commissioned by the Pierre Boulez Saal, presented by the Words Unspoken quartet and three extraordinary guest musicians.
