Piano Sonata in B minor S 178
Having completed the tour de force of performing all of Franz Liszt’s Études d’exécution transcendante at the Pierre Boulez Saal two seasons ago, Kirill Gerstein returns to present the composer’s equally challenging B-minor Sonata. With its innovative single-movement structure, the score abandons the traditional sonata form, whereas Schubert’s C-minor work, written only 25 years earlier as one of his last three sonatas, is still audibly indebted to Beethoven. Gerstein combines these two pianistic heavyweights with works by Igor Stravinsky and György Ligeti.
