Mezzo-Soprano
Piano
“History teaches people that history teaches people nothing.” Mahatma Gandhi’s famous saying is the point of departure for an unusual song recital with Marie Seidler and Wolfram Rieger. In a highly personal and topical program, the mezzo-soprano—previously heard during several of the Pierre Boulez Saal’s Schubert Weeks—and her piano partner tell stories of war, death, and loss, but also of hope, through songs of the late 19th and 20th centuries.
“Anything but an outdated format”, Marie Seidler says about art song and song recitals. We spoke with the mezzo-soprano back in 2021, when she was part of the Schubert Week’s Young Singers series, presented online during the pandemic. This season, she is joined by pianist Wolfram Rieger in a fascinating recital program exploring the themes of war and peace in songs by Mahler, Ives, Eisler, Weill, and others.
