Galina Ustvolskaya, who died almost 15 years ago, was one of the great individualists among the composers of our time. Her six piano sonatas were written over the course of more than four decades—yet they form a monumental and cohesive cycle. Markus Hinterhäuser, pianist and artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, has been deeply immersed in Ustvolskaya’s music for many years and brings these powerful works to the Pierre Boulez Saal in his solo recital.
