A pianistic perspective on Christian religion is the focus of Martin Helmchen’s solo recital. The program assembles works by four composers in whose lives the spiritual dimension was a central factor: chorale preludes by Bach the Thomaskantor, arranged by Ferruccio Busoni and Max Reger, mark the opening. Compositions by Liszt (who in his later years received the minor orders of priesthood) and César Franck (a church organist for 30 years) precede a selection from the visionary Vingt regards sur l’enfant-Jésus (“Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus”) by Olivier Messiaen, whose entire oeuvre is steeped in his Catholic faith.
