Wandrers Nachtlied II "Über allen Gipfeln" D 768

It seems almost impossible to imagine German lied without Goethe. Filtered through the musical genius of many composers—Franz Schubert first and foremost—his poems provided the nucleus of the genre’s full-fledged emergence in the early 19th century. Spoken and sung, Goethe’s words provide the theme of this third and final Lied und Lyrik program. Christoph Prégardien and Julius Drake trace the poet’s legacy in settings from Beethoven to Hugo Wolf. They are joined by actor Udo Samel, a former member of the ensembles at Berlin’s Schaubühne and the Vienna Burgtheater, who will read selected poems.
