For several decades, Sainkho Namtchylak has been among the most fascinating vocal artists on the international music scene—as one of just a few women practicing the distinctive type of overtone singing of her native Tuva in Southern Siberia, which she combines with experimental contemporary elements, jazz, and improvisation. She now comes to the Pierre Boulez Saal as part of a concert series coinciding with an exhibition at Berlin’s Museum für Islamische Kunst on Iran’s 5000-year history of culture and art. The concert offers audiences the chance to experience her vocalism in two different musical settings: as a duo with Belgian sound artist Jochem Baelus and in an ensemble mixing traditional instruments from various cultures with electronic sounds of the 20th century.
