At the age of 23, Samara Joy is already inviting comparisons to some of the great singers in jazz history. Named Best New Artist at the 2023 Grammy Awards, the Bronx-born musician enjoys immersing herself in the rich tradition of her chosen profession. “I think maybe people connect with the fact that I’m not faking it, that I really feel embedded in it,” she says, but is quick to add: “I’m still very much a student, even though I’ve graduated. So this is only the beginning—there is much, much more to come.” On her second album Linger Awhile, released in September 2022, Joy puts her personal spin on standards such as Misty, Someone to Watch Over Me, and ’Round Midnight, some of which she is sure to perform for her Berlin debut at the Pierre Boulez Saal.
