The Pierre Boulez Saal welcomes members of the Berliner Philharmoniker for a richly varied program of music for strings. Richard Strauss’s symphonically expansive, profoundly elegiac Metamorphosen, written toward the end of the composer’s long life, is followed by Prokofiev’s Sonata for Two Violins and Bruch’s String Octet. Also on the bill is Toru Takemitsu’s Le son calligraphié, a work from the late 1950s that helped put the Japanese composer on the international map.
