WEBERN CLOSE UP
The Barenboim-Said Akademie and the Pierre Boulez Saal open their doors for the second time to a day full of music and many other activities. The music program 2018 is dedicated to Anton Webern.
But who was Webern? A dry intellectual representative of the Second Viennese School and 12-tone composer to be feared? Or rather a highly emotional artist following the path of Viennese traditionalists, inspired by alpine scenery, bygone poets, and music of centuries past?
Many people would adhere to the first statement. In reality, this could not be further from the truth.
Come and join us at the Pierre Boulez Saal and immerse yourselves in this still enigmatic composer, whose entire oeuvre fits onto six CDs. Listen in on some of his key chamber music works. Discover who really were Webern’s main influences (a surprising collection). Read what Webern himself said about the emotional meaning in his music. Find out why Frank Zappa was crazy about him. Be wowed by a sound installation based on a twelve-tone row, considered by the composer Milton Babbitt to be “a paragon of symmetrical construction.”

Mozart Auditorium: Workshops with Dietmar Wiesner
The “Opus Anton Webern” workshops are meant for participation of the attendants, with the aim to bring Webern’s music closer in an uncomplicated and playful way. In the end, all participants will play small music pieces in the style of Webern.
Workshops for families, children aged 8 or above, young people and adults, maximum attendance 30 people
Duration: 60 minutes. In German, without English translation.
Instruments and a piano will be provided; participants may bring their own instruments.
