Listening to Charles Ives’s First Piano Sonata can feel a little bit like walking through a foreign city without a map, says Tamara Stefanovich—you hear a few bars of church music, a marching band, or a ragtime tune wafting from an open window. The Berlin-based pianist, who thrilled Pierre Boulez Saal audiences in a piano duo with Pierre-Laurent Aimard last season, combines Ives’s rarely heard work with compositions by Bach, Scarlatti, and Bartók.
