Thomas Hampson is not only one of today’s most accomplished lied interpreters—he has also been an acclaimed lied teacher and scholar for many years. Following last season’s Schubert Weekend, the American baritone now returns to the Pierre Boulez Saal to curate an entire Schubert Week. Together with his longtime accompanist, Wolfram Rieger, he opens the series of concerts with a solo recital. The two artists have selected works that combine settings of Goethe and Schiller, including the monumental 20-minute ballad Der Taucher, with songs to poems by Theodor Körner, Schubert’s friend Johann Mayrhofer, and others.

(The program is identical to that of the recital originally scheduled for April 2018, which had to be cancelled due to illness.)

Approximate running time: 1h 30m with one intermission
