For her very personal Ellington tribute, cellist Tomeka Reid leads a piano-less septet to present new compositions inspired by the master’s works. In Ellington’s tradition of assembling performers with unique talents to create interesting sound worlds, she has selected musicians who each have a distinctive voice. Equally versed in jazz and improvisation, they share a deep appreciation for Ellington’s music, life, and legacy. Part of the program was co-commissioned by the Pierre Boulez Saal and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
