Three contemporary compositions and an early-20th-century work precede Brahms’s Clarinet Trio in the program performed by Trio Catch. The three musicians, who met at the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt, named their group after Thomas Adès’s piece Catch, in which a clarinet is “caught” by a piano trio. Composers Pesson, Borowski, and Staud all wrote their works for Trio Catch, which premiered them over the last few years. Paul Juon, who has sometimes been called the “Russian Brahms,” composed his Miniatures between 1901 and 1904.
