Johannes Brahms
Sonata for Viola and Piano in E-flat major Op. 120 No. 2
The works of Johannes Brahms are at the center of the Classical and Romantic repertoire. In back-to-back concerts, three extraordinary artists now explore the composer’s duo sonatas from an unusual perspective: Daniel Barenboim and Pinchas Zukerman—close collaborators for several decades—present the three violin sonatas. The following evening focuses on the Op. 120 Sonatas, a pair of works written toward the end of Brahms’s life and conceived with two alternative combinations of instruments in mind. Jörg Widmann takes the clarinet part, while Pinchas Zukerman switches to the viola for a second performance.
