Piano Sonata in B-flat major Op. 106 "Hammerklavier"
“My only ambition as a musician was to hurl my spear into the infinite space of the future,” Franz Liszt declared to his longtime partner Carolyne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein. His curiosity for the unknown is perhaps most strikingly audible in Liszt’s late piano works, in which he cast aside harmonic and formal conventions of the 19th century to adopt a more avantgarde style. Yulianna Avdeeva combines a selection of these pieces, which were largely ignored during Liszt’s lifetime, with Beethoven’s monumental “Hammerklavier” Sonata.
