Improvised Music & Jazz

Freedom of Expression

One important rule in jazz and improvised music of many different traditions is that there are few strict rules. Each musical moment may be explored and re-explored—in an artistic dialogue that leads musicians from the unexpected to the unheard. This limitless combination of creative moments is once again a major focus at the Pierre Boulez Saal during the 2021–22 season.

With a three-part program curated in cooperation between the two institutions, Jazzfest Berlin comes to the Pierre Boulez Saal for the first time, presenting the Bobo Stenson Trio and the Vijay Iyer Trio as well as pianist Kaja Draksler and trumpeter Susana Santos Silva. The season’s second quarter also includes “A Charles Lloyd Celebration”: In addition to the big-screen premiere of the film portrait Love Longing Loss, the legendary jazz musician can be heard in two different trio formations, joined by tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain and guitarist Marvin Sewell, and by fellow jazz greats Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan.
