Improvised Music & Jazz

Created in the Moment

Improvised Music and Jazz from various backgrounds have been an integral part of the Pierre Boulez Saal’s artistic profile since the hall’s opening: the creation of music in the moment has proven again and again to be an extraordinarily powerful experience in this space, both for artists and audiences. With Chick Corea and Charles Lloyd, we welcome (back) two of today’s most revered jazz masters in the 2020–21 season. Clarinetist Louis Sclavis, guitarist Jakob Bro, and composer-pianist Uri Caine each perform double-set concerts with two different band lineups. Pianist Florian Weber and the Ensemble Modern join forces to improvise inspired by the rules of Arnold Schoenberg’s “Coalition Chess,” a chess variant developed by the composer. Closing the series, Kinan Azmeh returns to the Pierre Boulez Saal in June leading his CityBand in a program celebrating the ensemble’s 15th anniversary.
